Olympe de Gouges (1746 – 1793). She lived during the turbulent times of the French Revolution. She was seized by the ideas of freedom and liberty for all people in the world. She wrote plays and pamphlets on this. But she got something all wrong: she did not realize that the idea of brotherhood did not include women and slaves. Her commitment to the desperate condition of the black slaves in America was not a popular topic among her revolutionary brothers. Neither was her commitment to women’s issues. In 1793 she was decapitated. |
