Bertha von Suttner | ||
Bertha von Suttner (1843 – 1914) is the author of the once world famous book Die waffen nieder! (Lay down your arms). It is a courageous and blazing protest against warfare written at the apex of patriotism in the late 1800’s. Bertha von Suttner has a special connection to Sweden: for some time she was the secretary of Alfred Nobel at his house in Paris. She was much opposed to his ideas of terror weapons as means of creating world peace. Unfortunately nor Alfred Nobel or his successors listened to her warnings. However, she inspired Alfred Nobel to the creation of the Nobel Peace Prize. |
